Reaching for the Stars

I have a lot of ideas. Most of them are not really good but once in a while, an enlightened ones does crop up.

Lately though, I’ve gotten feedback that I should lay low, stay with the flow, don’t upset the apple cart and other cliches. I’ve been told I should keep my feet firmly to the ground (in the words of Leo Buscaglia, “if i kept both my feet firmly to the ground, I could not get my pants on!) and stay the course.

But that’s not me. My head (and my heart) is always looking for new ways to do things, new places to explore, new people to meet. I am unconventional and proud of it.

Innovation and exploration are cornerstones of advancing societies. Being thought and change leaders helps communities, organizations and individuals grow and survive. What worked in the past will not necessarily work in the future. We need to cultivate a mindset of questioning and always looking at improvements, from the very early days of childhood right through our senior years.

Unconventionality, when not destructive, should be celebrated, not scolded. Many of the greatest ideas and progress have come from unconventional thoughts.

So encourage your children, family, friends, co-workers, everyone to always be looking at ways to improve, do things more efficiently, advance our working mores,

And it does not hurt to be silly at times.

By the way, some of my ideas that, even I’ll admit, did not resonate:

  • Peanut butter toothpaste
  • Grape jelly body wash
  • Horse taxis
  • Domes over highways during snowstorms
